INFORMATION BEFORE THE DRAW:

The ASEAN Cup (formerly known as the AFF Cup) is the most important tournament in Southeast Asian football. The ASEAN Cup is held every two years by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). The Vietnamese team has won the ASEAN Cup twice in 2008 and 2018.

Seeding before the ASEAN Cup 2024 draw, Vietnam and Thailand are in Pot 1. Pot 2 includes Indonesia and Malaysia. Philippines and Singapore are in Pot 3. Pot 4 includes Myanmar and Cambodia. Laos and Timor Leste/Brunei are in Pot 5.

With the above seeding results, Vietnam will not meet Thailand in the group stage. However, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team will likely fall into a difficult group.

That is the case when the draw put Vietnam in the same group with opponents Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar and Laos. They are all the strongest teams in their seed groups.

A more ideal group for Vietnam in the 2024 ASEAN Cup group stage would include Malaysia, Singapore and Timor Leste/Brunei.

In terms of strength, these opponents are not as strong as Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar or Laos. Therefore, the group stage will be easier for the Vietnamese team.
