Although it is not yet Tet, at this time, at the kumquat gardens serving the Lunar New Year in Thanh Thuy commune (Thanh Ha), many traders have come to see and deposit to buy goods.
The price of kumquat has increased, making Thanh Thuy commune people excited.
Thanh Thuy Commune is the kumquat orchard of Thanh Ha District with about 30 hectares, mainly concentrated in Lai Xa 2 Village. Leading us to visit his family's kumquat orchard, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Lai Xa 2 Village, Thanh Thuy Commune excitedly said: "This year's kumquats have the highest price compared to the past 10 years. Up to this point, my family has received deposits for the whole garden. Hopefully, Tet will be more prosperous than every year."
According to kumquat growers here, the selling price at the garden this year is 300,000 - 520,000 VND/kumquat pot, 200,000 - 400,000 VND/kumquat vase, depending on the size. This selling price is 80,000 - 120,000 VND/tree higher than previous years. The high price and easy to sell, gardeners have received deposits of about 50% or more of the kumquat trees in the garden.
With the above price, after deducting expenses, people earn about 50 million VND/sao. Families that grow a small amount earn about 100 million VND, families that grow a lot earn up to 300 million VND.
Currently, kumquat growers are removing tarps and drying the soil.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, who has more than 20 years of experience growing kumquats, the price of kumquats this year is due to the influence of the weather, the number of beautiful trees is small, only about 30%. "While supply cannot meet demand, the price will be pushed up", Mr. Nguyen said. According to Mr. Nguyen, kumquat trees have two important stages of development. That is the flowering and fruiting stage and the kumquat fruiting stage as it is now. At the time when the tree flowers and bears fruit (ie around July), there is a lot of rain, the tree grows strongly so it cannot flower. "We had to cut the tree 2-3 times, control it to flower and bear fruit as desired", Mr. Nguyen said. Therefore, kumquat growers this year are also having a much harder time than in previous years.
Due to the slow flowering and fruiting, this year's kumquat trees are also in full bloom later. "Every year, around this time, the kumquat trees are ripe, people are just waiting to sell them. This year, the kumquat trees are just starting to bloom," said Nguyen Van Tuan, a kumquat grower in Lai Xa 2 village. To ensure they have the desired kumquat trees and pots to meet consumer demand, kumquat growers are currently focusing on removing tarps, drying the soil, pruning bad fruits, watering with nitrogen and spraying pesticides, preventing frost, and preserving the tree's appearance waiting for the day of sale. Thanks to the experience and good cultivation techniques of the people, along with being exploited from old fruit-bearing kumquat trees, the kumquat trees here are resilient, adaptable to all weather conditions, stay fresh for a long time, and have beautiful appearance. The kumquat trees of Thanh Thuy commune are often consumed in Hanoi and the provinces and cities: Hai Phong, Quang Ninh...
