High quality, high yield, suitable harvest time so Taiwanese guava sells for a good price, farmers earn high profits.
In early 2024, the Center for Science and Technology Application and Variety Testing (Department of Science and Technology) built a model for taking care of Taiwanese pear guava during the business period (trees 3 years old or older) on a scale of 6 hectares with 13 participating households in Bach Dang commune, That Hung ward (Kinh Mon).
The center's staff has applied a number of methods to change growth and development so that guavas can produce high yield, quality, and be harvested at the right time, selling for a higher price.
Under normal conditions, guava flowers bloom from March to April and are harvested from late June to August. However, at this time, the quality of Taiwanese pear guava is poor, has a sour taste due to the rainy weather, and the selling price is low because it is the same harvest season as other fruits...
From late April to mid-May, the center's staff uses pruning and canopy shaping methods to stimulate flowering. The pruned branches are those that are too tall, inside the canopy, weak, diseased, dry, growing too close to the ground, crossed, old branches that are no longer able to produce fruit... Guava is harvested from September of the previous year to March-April of the following year.
This technique makes the guava canopy balanced and airy, thereby helping to distribute light evenly, keeping the garden clean, limiting the occurrence of pests and diseases, especially during hot, rainy, and high humidity periods.
As a result, the yield of Taiwanese pear guava in the model reached nearly 29 tons/ha, 3 tons/ha higher than the control garden. Because the guava was harvested late, avoiding the peak season, the selling price was also higher. After deducting costs, farmers earned a profit of over 355 million VND/ha, 80 million VND/ha higher than the control.
That is the result of the public service "Transfer of application of scientific and technological advances in care and disease management on guava trees" organized by the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Testing of Provincial Varieties on the morning of October 29 in Bach Dang commune.
