Vietnam's number one billiard player Tran Quyet Chien has a chance to become world number one if he plays well at the 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup in Ho Chi Minh City this week.
The tournament will take place at Nguyen Du Stadium from May 20-26 with 149 players from 19 countries around the world. Because there is no qualifying round, Vietnam's top players such as Tran Quyet Chien, Bao Phuong Vinh, Tran Thanh Luc, Chiem Hong Thai... will compete in the main round (round of 32) from today, May 24.
The round of 32 has eight groups of four players each, playing a round-robin with each match to 40 points at stake. From the round of 16 to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, the competition will be a knockout, taking place on May 25-26, with 50 points at stake.
In this home tournament, Tran Quyet Chien has a chance to reach the top of the world. On the world 3-cushion carom rankings, the 40-year-old player is currently ranked second with 371 points. He is 10 points behind the world number one Cho Myung Woo (Korea). With this gap, Quyet Chien must at least reach the quarter-finals, while Cho Myung Woo cannot reach the final. If the Korean player reaches the final, Quyet Chien must win the championship to take his opponent's position.
Since the beginning of 2024, Quyet Chien has been in good form. He won the World Cup in Bogota (Colombia), then together with Bao Phuong Vinh won the world team three-cushion billiards championship, then won the Phuc Thinh three-cushion championship.
Besides the top Vietnamese players, many big names in the world of billiards such as Dick Jaspers (Netherlands), Kim Jun Tae (Korea), Sameh Sidhom (Egypt) and Belgian legend Frederick Caudron are also present in Ho Chi Minh City. The strong players will show their skills today.
