Ho Chi Minh City recruited more than 2,200 additional 10th grade seats at 36 public schools, but only about 1,400 candidates passed the exam.
Information was released by the city's Department of Education and Training on the morning of August 7.
Although there are still more than 800 places left, the Department considers this result positive, creating conditions for candidates with suitable test scores to study in public schools. Last year, schools recruited 3,000 additional students, but only received more than 1,000 applications.
This is the second year the city has recruited additional public grade 10 students in schools that still have quotas. Students are allowed to apply if they have failed all their first-round choices and their admission scores meet the third-round standard of the school they are applying to. The new point this year is that junior high school students in Can Gio, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi districts and Thu Duc City, if they apply to high schools in the same area, will be considered based on their first-round standard score (0.25 to 1 point lower than their third-round choice).
The Department's conditions are a barrier that makes many top schools such as Nguyen Thuong Hien, Phu Nhuan, Le Quy Don... have 12-40 quotas but cannot recruit. Because with the standard score from 23 to 26, the students who passed have passed to other schools.
For the same reason, some schools with an entrance score of 15.5-17 only have a few applications, such as Go Vap (Go Vap District), Linh Trung, Phuoc Long (Thu Duc City), Suong Nguyet Anh Secondary - High School (District 10)..., far from the number of students needed to recruit more.
However, many suburban and outlying schools with low admission scores (11.5-14.25) received more applications than last year.
The 10th grade public exam in Ho Chi Minh City took place on June 6-7, with more than 98,000 candidates. The admission score is the total score of three subjects: Math, Literature, English, without any coefficient. More than 77,300 students got places in public schools, with an admission rate of about 80%.
The Department of Education and Training said the list of additional successful candidates will be made public at high schools. Students will enroll from August 7 to 12.
