"It is clear that this topic is attracting increasing interest from analysts and political experts. So far, no decision has been made on this issue," Peskov told reporters. The spokesman said he would announce any decision the Russian leader made on the issue as soon as it was made.

Mr Peskov made the statement after Russian daily Kommersant reported that staff in the Russian President's Office were reportedly discussing forming a group to nominate Mr Putin for election. The Kommersant article suggested that Mr Putin could run for president as a self-nominated candidate.

Russia's state news agency RIA quoted a source as saying on December 13 that the Russian parliament could announce that the 2024 presidential election is scheduled to take place on March 17, 2024.

Last week, Reuters news agency cited 6 sources as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to run for re-election. If he wins the election in 2024, Putin will stay in power until at least 2030.
