The Supreme Court ruled on July 1 that former US President Donald Trump has immunity from certain alleged actions as president in the federal election interference case. However, the ruling does not have the same effect on other actions or cases.

On the same day, the Supreme Court also sent the presidential immunity request back to a lower court, making the chances of a trial before Election Day, November 5, increasingly dim.

Just minutes after the Supreme Court's ruling, Mr. Trump took to the Truth Social platform to praise the ruling.

“A great victory for our Constitution and our democracy. Proud to be an American!”, Mr. Trump wrote.

For its part, President Joe Biden's campaign said the ruling does not change the facts of what happened during the January 6 riot.

Mr. Trump currently faces federal charges in Florida and state charges in Georgia. Last month, the former president was convicted in a New York court of falsifying business records related to a financial deal arranged by a former associate with an adult film actress before the 2016 presidential election.

Trump’s lawyers have argued that former presidents are entitled to extensive legal protections and cannot be criminally prosecuted for official actions unless they are impeached by the House and removed from office by the Senate. Trump has been impeached twice by the House, but both times Senate Republicans had enough votes to save him from removal. Trump himself has repeatedly claimed immunity on the campaign trail and on social media.
