The first time he saw Thanh Van at the clothing store, Duong Sieu fell in love at first sight and proposed to her on the second day of meeting.
It was the afternoon of the 30th of Tet in 2017, a young man from Hunan, China came to Ho Chi Minh City for a vacation. Wandering on the deserted streets, he was curious to see a clothing store still open. Peering inside, Duong Sieu's heart suddenly skipped a beat when he saw the shop owner smiling at him.
"I was immediately captivated by her radiant smile and captivating eyes," the 1990-born man recalled. "Not only was she beautiful, but her voice was also warm. At that time, my mind kept urging me to keep in touch with this girl."
Looking around the store, Duong Sieu discovered many lace dresses - the main product of his family in Guangzhou. He walked in and introduced Van to his management job at the factory, hoping for a long-term cooperation. For this reason, he asked for the phone number of the Vietnamese girl who was 4 years younger than him.
In the messages asking about her, Duong Sieu knew that Van did not have a lover. On the second day of meeting, he proposed that the Vietnamese girl become his girlfriend with the reason "If I don't say it, I'm afraid Van will admit that she loves someone else".
Nguyen Thanh Van, living in Ho Chi Minh City, did not believe in love at first sight. Seeing Duong Sieu's handsome appearance, good job and financial condition, she did not believe that he did not have a girlfriend. She used the excuse that she did not want a long-distance relationship and the language and cultural differences to refuse.
"The main reason is that I'm afraid of being scammed. Many such scams have been exposed by the press, so I don't dare take the risk," Van said.
Thinking that Duong Sieu would be discouraged, but when he returned home, he texted her every day to ask about her health and work.
At the time he met Thanh Van, in addition to managing his father's lace factory in Guangzhou, Duong Sieu also ran his own business. He lost his mother at a young age and had a deep love affair but it ended, so he had no intention of getting married and spent his time traveling. When he met Thanh Van, he changed his mind.
"Your gentleness and youthfulness made me fall in love with you at first sight. I want to spend the rest of my life with you," Duong Sieu's confession after a few months of texting back and forth made the Vietnamese girl's heart flutter.
Realizing that the Vietnamese girl gradually had a good impression of him, the Chinese guy intensified his pursuit. Every weekend, he flew from Guangzhou to Ho Chi Minh City to visit Van. The two went out to dinner, walked around town and talked together. After three consecutive months like that, they officially became a couple.
Van's parents strongly objected because, like their daughter, they suspected Duong Sieu of being a scammer. Understanding the minds of adults, on Van's birthday after the two had been dating for a few months, Duong Sieu organized a party to meet his girlfriend's family. Because he was nervous, he held a cup of tea and the dishes kept banging against each other, but when he asked permission to bring his girlfriend home to meet his family, he was very confident.
However, the girl's parents continued to object. Duong Sieu discussed with Thanh Van about inviting more close friends to go with her to reassure her parents. In Hunan, the Vietnamese girl was warmly welcomed by her boyfriend's family, from his grandfather, father to his siblings. Everyone hoped that they would soon be together.
To prove his love, Duong Sieu also taught himself Vietnamese in the hope of being able to communicate with everyone. He also gave Van the right to choose whether to live in Vietnam or China after marriage. Realizing the sincerity of the young man, the girl's parents agreed to let the two hold a wedding in November 2018.
Before the wedding took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Duong Sieu's family had to face a series of problems. Because the company was in trouble, his father could not come to Vietnam. His grandfather fell and broke his leg, requiring him to be hospitalized for a long time.
With no family members coming to Vietnam to attend the wedding, suspicions about Duong Sieu's background continued to rise, causing Thanh Van's parents to request that the wedding be canceled. Only when the young man connected the two families via phone, talked to his grandfather who was in the hospital, and promised to take his wife's whole family to China to visit their home, did Van's parents feel relieved.
After the wedding, for work convenience, Van followed her husband to Guangzhou. The first days of life in a foreign land always made the young bride feel tense. Duong Sieu often patiently waited in silence for his wife to vent her emotions before explaining.
In his free time, he helped her get used to the new language, teaching her to read and write. Knowing that Van was not used to Chinese food, Duong Sieu found Vietnamese restaurants and took his wife there, even teaching her to cook the dishes she liked. Once a month, the husband booked a plane ticket back to Vietnam, so his wife could reunite with her family.
Thanh Van gradually adapted to her new life. In three consecutive years, she gave birth to two sons. Afraid that his wife would be tired, Duong Sieu took on all the childcare tasks such as making milk, bathing, and putting the children to sleep. He also welcomed his wife's parents to live with him so that Van would not miss home, and at the same time he could teach the children Vietnamese.
In 2020, the couple returned to the clothing business. Instead of importing goods from Guangzhou to sell domestically, they "did the opposite" by establishing a company specializing in sewing Vietnamese clothes to sell in China according to Thanh Van's idea.
At first, the couple encountered many difficulties. Because Thanh Van is Vietnamese, sometimes when livestreaming to sell products, she received criticism because her Chinese pronunciation was not accurate. There was even a time when they were insulted by customers. Every time he saw his wife crying, Duong Sieu encouraged her: "If others can do it, we can do it too. With me here, everything will pass."
After three years, the couple's work gradually went smoothly. In early 2024, seeing Van missing Vietnam, the husband suggested returning to the country to open a company to teach livestream sales as well as sell fashion clothes. His main purpose was to let his wife have her own company in her homeland.
In Duong Sieu's opinion, if a woman knows how to appreciate and strive to build her own value, she will become stronger, more valuable and will not allow anyone to look down on her. He always hopes Thanh Van will be like that, because she deserves it.
As for Van, thanks to her husband's love, she found confidence and strength. During the years living together, he showed her tolerance and appreciation for what the other person possesses.
"Being with him, I understand that love is not just about sexual attraction but also the connection between two hearts to defeat all adversities," the Vietnamese wife shared.
