South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and top officials have submitted their resignations after the People Power Party lost parliamentary elections.
Han Duck-soo, 74, has been prime minister since May 2022. Prime Minister Han's decision to resign came after the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) suffered a defeat in the parliamentary election. With more than 99% of votes counted as of the morning of April 11, the opposition Democratic Party (DP) was expected to win more than 170 of the 300 seats in the National Assembly. The PPP was predicted to win more than 100 seats.
Mr. Han Duck-soo served as prime minister in the administration of former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun from April 2007 to February 2008. He has more than 40 years of public service experience, including at the customs agency, the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Finance of South Korea. He also served as ambassador to the United States.
Following the ruling party's election defeat, President Yoon Suk-yeol vowed to reform domestic affairs according to the will of the people. "I will humbly accept the will of the people expressed through the election and will strive to reform the government and do my best to stabilize the economy and improve the livelihood of the people," Yoon said in a statement.
