In a letter of resignation “with immediate effect”, Ms Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed that she would be stepping down as Speaker and Member of Parliament, stressing that the decision was “to protect the integrity and dignity” of the South African legislature. Ms Mapisa-Nqakula also continued to maintain her innocence and determination to clear her name.

The decision to resign came after the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed Mapisa-Nqakula's urgent appeal to prevent the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and South African Police from arresting the lawmaker on corruption charges.

The NPA previously accused Ms Mapisa-Nqakula, during her tenure as South Africa's defence minister, of accepting more than $135,000 in bribes from a defence contractor - who has now become a witness in the case.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has received Mapisa-Nqakula's resignation.
