Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi also announced that all necessary help will be provided to the victims.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed several state officials to the spot and asked local authorities and police officials to provide all possible help to the injured.

According to local media outlet NDTV, at least 87 people, including women and children, were killed and many others injured in the tragedy. A witness said most of the deaths occurred after falling into roadside drains.

"The incident happened due to overcrowding at a time when people were leaving the venue" for the religious ceremony, said Ashish Kumar, the Hathras district manager, where the incident took place.

Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state with over 200 million people. Chief Minister Adityanath has ordered an investigation into the incident.
