After 30 minutes of eating toad meat, the 24-year-old man felt tired, had a stomachache, and felt nauseous. He was taken to the emergency room but was severely poisoned and died.
On October 2, the patient was taken to the emergency room at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi (Quang Binh) with difficulty breathing, slow pulse, and abdominal pain. Doctors and nurses actively treated him, administered IV fluids, washed his stomach, and inserted a pacemaker, but the poisoning was too severe and the patient died that night. Doctors determined the cause of death was toad meat poisoning.
Toads contain poison in their skin, salivary glands, internal organs and eggs. Toad venom can cause dangerous symptoms in the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems within 1-2 hours of eating.
When eaten, the poison seeps into the bloodstream and destroys many body parts, the most dangerous of which is the cardiovascular system. In severe cases of poisoning, the victim may suffer liver failure, acute kidney failure, or even death.
People are advised not to eat toad meat if they do not know how to prepare it, and absolutely do not eat toad eggs, skin, or internal organs.
