South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrived in Hawaii on July 9, beginning a trip to the United States with an agenda focused on strengthening South Korea's security against what the country calls external threats.
The South Korean presidential office said Yoon Suk Yeol will stay in Hawaii for two days before going to Washington to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit on July 10-11.
President Yoon Suk-yeol is scheduled to visit the Indo-Pacific Command on July 10 and receive a security briefing from US military commanders. This will also be the first visit by a South Korean president since the command was renamed from the Pacific Command in 2018. This is the largest combatant command of the US military, overseeing US Forces Korea, which maintains about 28,500 troops in this Northeast Asian country.
The Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) - a US-led joint naval exercise - is currently taking place in Hawaii with the participation of South Korea and 28 other countries, starting on June 26 and lasting until August 29.
