Previously, Thanh Hoa General Hospital received patient LQT (63 years old, male, residing in Thanh Hoa province) who was hospitalized with a nail piercing his skull, life-threatening.
According to the patient’s family, Mr. T. suffered from depression. Recently, the patient often had insomnia, felt pain and restlessness. Uncomfortable due to the pain, the patient hammered a nail into the top of his head but was promptly discovered by his family and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Clinical examination and brain CT scan results showed that the patient had a craniocerebral injury and a superior sagittal sinus injury caused by a metal foreign body inserted into the left parietal region, next to the superior sagittal sinus. The foreign body was 0.5 cm in diameter and 5.1 cm long.
This is considered a case of severe injury due to the wound sticking to the superior sagittal sinus communicating directly with the confluence of the superior sagittal sinuses, so there is a risk of massive and difficult-to-control bleeding, and the patient may die if the foreign object is not surgically removed promptly.
Immediately, the doctors transferred the patient to the emergency operating room. After more than 2 hours of work, the doctors and nurses successfully performed surgery, removing the nail more than 5 cm long from the patient's head.
After many days of monitoring and treatment, the patient's health recovered well and he was discharged home to continue treatment.
