In Oriental medicine, insomnia is called “insomnia”. The disease is related to the imbalance of the heart, liver, spleen, kidneys and insufficient yin blood...
There are many causes of insomnia such as: old and weak people, overwork causing blood loss, the mind cannot maintain its spirit (fire cannot be suppressed down and water cannot rise up causing the heart and kidneys to not communicate), mental depression, strong liver fire, disharmony of the spleen and stomach....
Treatment of insomnia requires attention to eliminating the root cause of the disease, combined with non-drug treatment using the following measures to improve treatment effectiveness.
1. Some non-drug methods to treat insomnia
- Scratching the scalp: Before going to bed, you can use a blunt wooden comb to scratch your head, brushing from the forehead to the top and then back, from the top of the head gently brushing to both sides, brushing back and forth for about 15 minutes. When brushing, you must be calm, brushing lightly and then vigorously.
- Pillow with medicine:
Choose 1 of the following 4 formulas:
+ Mint, patchouli (dried) each 250-300g or use 350g dried chrysanthemum, 250g centella asiatica, put in a cloth bag to make pillow stuffing.
+ 150g Polygala, 200g Angelica dahurica, 250g chrysanthemum
+ Aloe vera 200g, chamomile250g, angelica 150g

- Apply essential oil: When you feel uncomfortable, dizzy and can't sleep, apply essential oil to the two temples (the depression one inch below the outer corner of the eyebrow) and the wind pond point (behind the mastoid process, on the outer edge of the neck muscle, level with the earlobe).
- Foot bath: A basin of natural warm water, soak your feet for 20 minutes before going to bed at night. The ancients said: "After a meal, walk three hundred steps, before going to bed, soak your feet in a basin". Depending on weather conditions and each person's sensitivity, the temperature of the soaking water is 38-43 degrees Celsius.
- Press three acupoints:
+ Yongquan point (curl the toes, the point is in the hollow of the sole of the foot).
+ Taixi point (behind the medial malleolus, upper edge of the heel bone, midpoint of the line connecting the posterior edge of the medial malleolus with the inner edge of the Achilles tendon, level with the top of the medial malleolus).
+ Neiguan point (inner arm, two inches above the wrist line, in the gap between the two palmar muscles).
Use your fingertips to press each acupoint for 3-5 minutes. It's even better if you soak your feet in medicinal water before pressing the acupoints.

2. Things to note
- Do not use your brain for half an hour before going to bed: Avoid stress such as watching detective or suspense movies, or reading books that attract strong emotions. You can listen to soft music in a quiet environment, practice breathing fresh air, practice walking leisurely for 20-30 minutes in the evening.
- Take a warm bath to relax before going to bed: Before going to bed, soak your feet in warm water, wipe your feet clean and rub your feet warm. In winter, it is even more necessary to rub the soles of your feet warm.
- After dinner, you should not use stimulants such as tea, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes... You should not eat too much for dinner, avoid using hot tonics such as deer antler... Or limit hot spices such as chili, pepper...
- You can have a cup of hot milk or some cake to provide more carbohydrates, avoid hypoglycemia at night causing sleep disorders. Choose to eat foods that are good for the nerves such as fish, oysters, crab, pig liver and kidney, almonds, peanuts, apple seeds, beans, milk...
- Dinner should be light, do not eat too much stimulants, grease or foods that are difficult to digest. Choose foods that are good for sleep such as cereals (sticky rice, rice, bread, potatoes...), squash, squash, sweet potato leaves, Malabar spinach, spinach, water spinach, lettuce... A meal rich in cereals will help the body absorb tryptophan, an amino acid that helps you sleep. On the contrary, eating too much meat will cause excitement and difficulty sleeping due to the effects of tyrosine.
- The bedroom needs to be quiet, airy, with limited light and noise. Do not place too many items (TV, radio, video...) to avoid magnetic fields emitted from these items, affecting sleep. Put aside thoughts, eliminate stress, keep your mind stable...
