Previously, a woman in Hoanh Son commune, Kinh Mon town (Hai Duong) almost lost her life after swallowing grass carp bile.
On the afternoon of March 15, Dr. Le Quang Thuan, Deputy Director of the Poison Control Center of Bach Mai Hospital, said: "Currently, the health of the 56-year-old female patient in Hoanh Son commune (Kinh Mon) who was poisoned by grass carp bile has improved well and is expected to be discharged next week."
According to the patient, at 8am on February 27, after hearing from an acquaintance that swallowing fish gallbladder was good for health, he went to the market to ask for grass carp gallbladder to swallow raw. A few hours later, the patient had a stomachache, nausea, vomited a lot of food and digestive juices, had several bowel movements in 3 hours, and had loose stools.
On February 29, the patient was tired, had a stomachache, nausea, chills, and little urine... When the symptoms became worse, the family took him to the Kinh Mon Town Medical Center for emergency care and then transferred him to Hai Duong Provincial General Hospital. Upon admission, the patient showed signs of fatigue, yellow mucous membranes, swelling of the face and both limbs, and inability to urinate... Here, doctors examined and diagnosed the patient with grass carp bile poisoning leading to liver and kidney damage, affecting the whole body.
The patient was then transferred to the Poison Control Center of Bach Mai Hospital and treated with anti-poison resuscitation and blood filtration 4 times...
Previously in April 2014, Ms. Nguyen Thi M. in Hien Thanh commune (Kinh Mon) also swallowed black carp bile, leading to poisoning, severe liver failure, acute kidney failure and was saved by doctors at the Provincial General Hospital.
According to the latest research, grass carp bile contains bile salts, bilirubin, cholesterol, fatty acids, mineral salts and most importantly, the 5α-cyprinol group which is potentially toxic, especially to the kidneys and liver. Normally, in the body of living things, the amount of bile secreted is enough to help digest food. Using the entire gallbladder at a high concentration will cause poisoning. In addition, if the bile is infected with bacteria, using bile is an indirect way to introduce pathogens into the human body.
People who are poisoned by grass carp bile can die from acute kidney failure. The severity of the disease depends on whether the person drinking it is healthy or weak, and whether the fish bile is large or small. Symptoms of poisoning will appear 2-3 hours after drinking grass carp bile. Mild cases include abdominal pain, vomiting, and loose stools, but urination is normal.
Doctors recommend that people should not use grass carp bile in particular and fish bile in general in any form or for any purpose. The idea of using grass carp bile to treat many diseases such as joint pain, back pain, asthma, and physical weakness has no scientific basis. For other types of bile, Western medicine does not recommend using them for treatment.
