Stellantis is recalling nearly 318,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans worldwide to fix faulty airbags.

According to Stellantis' announcement, the recall applies to some Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 full-size vehicles manufactured between 2018 and 2021, because the airbag inflators of these vehicles (manufactured by Japanese company Takata) have too much force, which can explode and cause injury to people sitting in the vehicle.

Documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on March 22 said moisture could enter the inflator due to a manufacturing defect, causing corrosion and cracking. According to Stellantis, the airbags could deploy even without a collision due to high temperatures in the cabin. Stellantis has received seven warranty claims and several requests for technical support from customers, but has not recorded any injuries. Most of the recalled vehicles are in North America.

Stellantis said dealers will replace the side airbag module on vehicles requiring the repair. Owners will be notified starting May 3. Stellantis estimates that the number of vehicles requiring the repair represents 1 percent of the total vehicles produced during the period.
