Malaysia's national news agency Bernama quoted information from the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Azam Baki saying that in the past 5 years, this Southeast Asian country has lost at least 277 billion ringgit (about 58 billion USD) due to corruption.

This figure is calculated based on cumulative estimates of Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Addressing the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, MACC chief stressed that facing the challenge of fighting corruption in an increasingly complex borderless world is certainly different from the approach taken to fight corruption decades ago. The level of damage Malaysia has suffered is also much different from the past few years.

Malaysia's anti-graft chief expressed disappointment over the massive loss in the federal government.

The MACC chief said the figure of RM277 billion is almost equal to the combined GDP of the two states of Johor and Penang.

Malaysia's national anti-corruption strategy stresses: “The persistent losses in government ministries, agencies, government-linked companies and statutory bodies need to be urgently addressed.”
