On December 8, the Putrajaya Court of Appeal (Malaysia) announced to uphold the 12-year prison sentence for former Prime Minister Najib Razak in relation to the Malaysian State Investment Fund (1MDB) scandal that caused billions of dollars in losses, leading to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in 2018.
At the trial, Judge Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil rejected Mr. Najib's appeal and upheld all seven charges according to the ruling of the Malaysian High Court.
In 2020, in his first trial, the former Malaysian Prime Minister was convicted of charges related to the misappropriation of assets owned by 1MDB, in which 42 million ringgit ($9.9 million) from a former branch of 1MDB was transferred to Mr. Najib's bank accounts.
He and his accomplices are accused of embezzling billions of dollars to spend on luxury real estate and art.
Mr Najib is expected to continue his appeal to the Malaysian Supreme Court and may be released on bail until the appeal is concluded.
