Worried about fires in Hanoi, Ms. Pham Thi Mau in Dong Quan village, Tan Hung ward (Hai Duong city) often calls to ask about and remind her nephew who is studying in Long Bien district (Hanoi).

Worry day, worry night

Every time a fire breaks out in Hanoi, Hai Duong parents whose children are studying, working, and living in the capital feel more worried and insecure. It is even more heartbreaking when many fires that cause great loss of life involve people from Hai Duong.

Most recently, the fire at a 6-storey house on Dinh Cong Ha Street (Hoang Mai District, Hanoi) on the evening of June 16 killed 4 people in a family, all 4 of whom were relatives in a family in Cap Village, Hong Du Commune, Ninh Giang District (Hai Duong). Previously, in the fire at a motel on Trung Kinh Street (Cau Giay District, Hanoi), among the 14 victims who died, there was also a young couple from Quang Khai Commune (Tu Ky). In September 2023, in the fire at a mini apartment building on Khuong Ha Street (Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi) that shocked the world with 56 deaths, there were also 2 young victims from Hai Duong.

After each fire, people in Hai Duong feel both heartbroken for their unfortunate compatriots and worried about their relatives and children studying and living in Hanoi.

Ms. Pham Thi Mau in Dong Quan village, Tan Hung ward (Hai Duong city) has a nephew named Nguyen Van Hien (21 years old) who is studying and living in Long Bien district (Hanoi) and shared: "Every time I read the news about the fire in Hanoi, I worry that something unfortunate might happen to my nephew. I have to call him often to check on him."

Sharing the same sentiment, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen in Thuong Do village, Thuong Vu commune (Kim Thanh, Hai Duong) whose child is staying to study in Hanoi also said: "My daughter is studying in Thanh Xuan district, very close to where the fire happened, so I am even more worried. No one wants to live in unsafe conditions, but for the sake of making a living, for the sake of life, we have to accept living in fear and anxiety."

This is also the common feeling of many parents in Hai Duong who have children studying and living in Hanoi, especially students and new workers living in cramped, stuffy mini-apartments surrounded by tiger cages.

Act Now

Since the mini apartment fire in Thanh Xuan district in September 2023, some Hai Duong parents have gone directly to Hanoi to check the fire prevention and fighting conditions at their children's accommodation. Some people have bought rope ladders and fire extinguishers for their children to feel more secure and to prevent bad situations from happening.

After checking that her child's place of residence had an emergency exit, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen felt less worried. However, Ms. Huyen still reminded her child to buy a gas mask, a rope ladder, and learn about emergency fire prevention.

But not all parents have the opportunity to directly see and equip their children with the necessary tools and equipment for fire prevention and fighting. Many parents can only regularly check on their children from afar.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen in Hoang Xa village, Hong Hung commune (Gia Loc) said, "I am very worried, so every day I call my child to remind him to be careful with electricity and to travel safely. In particular, I always tell him to learn fire prevention and fighting skills to have the skills to protect himself."

As the new university and college admission season has begun, many Hai Duong parents will have to find accommodation in Hanoi for their children to enroll. The worry of finding safe, affordable and economical accommodation is even more pressing for each parent.

According to information from Hanoi City Police, in the first 4 months of 2024, there were 387 fires in the city. After reviewing, the city still has over 2,100 projects that have not been accepted for fire prevention and fighting since the Law on Fire Prevention and Fighting took effect; 1,429 apartment buildings, 398 multi-apartment houses, about 31,200 boarding houses and over 39,200 houses combined with production and business are at risk of fire and explosion.
