On January 10, diamond mining company Lucara Diamond announced the discovery of a 166-carat type IIa diamond from Botswana's Karowe mine.
Type IIa diamonds are all carbon and are considered the purest and most valuable.
According to the Canada-based company, this is the first major discovery of 2024. The diamond is the 328th over 100 carats since the company began mining in 2012.
Lucara Diamond CEO William Lamb said the latest discovery is the basis for investment in an underground expansion project that will extend the mine's operating life until at least 2040.
