NHK television reported on November 11 that the second round, the decisive round of the Japanese Parliament's prime minister election with two candidates, ended with the result that the President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Mr. Ishiba Shigeru, won with 221 votes, thereby being re-elected as Prime Minister of Japan.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party (CDPJ) chairman, Yoshihiko Noda, came in second with 160 votes.

The vote to elect prime minister in Japan's parliament, held within 30 days of the October 27 general election, had to go into a second round for the first time in three decades.

Mr. Ishiba and Mr. Noda were the two candidates with the highest votes in the first round with 221 and 156 votes respectively. Neither candidate achieved a majority, so the House of Representatives conducted a second round of voting with the two candidates with the highest votes immediately after.

With this result, Mr. Ishiba Shigeru officially continues to be Prime Minister of the Land of the Rising Sun and this evening, Mr. Ishiba will form a new cabinet.
