Indonesia's Dokono volcano erupts with ash 1.7 km high

At an altitude of about 1,335m above sea level, Dukono volcano is at high alert level 2.

On the afternoon of January 16, Dukono volcano on Halmahera Island, North Maluku province, eastern Indonesia, erupted, creating a 1.7 km high ash column above the crater.

Sarjan Roboke, an official at Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Mitigation Center (PVMBG), said the thick, white ash column was moving southwest.

With an altitude of about 1,335m above sea level, Dukono volcano is at high alert level 2, on a 2-level scale, which stipulates a no-go zone within a 3km radius from the mountain.

According to PVMBG, in 2023, Dukono volcano erupted a total of 3,324 times, forcing people to wear masks and protective glasses when doing outdoor activities because of the volcanic ash falling.
