Thousands evacuated as volcano erupts in Indonesia

More than 2,000 people living in the area around the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano in East Nusa Tenggara province have been evacuated to temporary shelters amid increased activity at the volcano, Indonesian officials said on January 2.

According to the Volcanic and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG), the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano has erupted several times in recent weeks, with the January 1 eruption creating an ash column more than 1.5 km high.

PVMBG said the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano also erupted on January 2, but the agency did not record ash from this activity.

Local officials said recent eruptions have affected the lives of people near Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, forcing more than 2,200 people to move to safer areas.

Local authorities raised the volcano alert to the second highest level on a four-level scale, expanding the danger zone from 2 km to 4 km around the crater. Ash from the eruption forced the closure of Frans Seda airport, 80 km away, on January 1.

Indonesia is prone to frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide. Last month, the Marapi volcano on Sumatra island erupted, killing 23 people. Indonesia currently has nearly 130 active volcanoes.
