A catastrophic tanker explosion occurred at around 12:30 today (local time) in northern Nigeria, killing at least 94 people and seriously injuring 50 others who had to be hospitalized.
At least 94 people were killed in northern Nigeria when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded near a crowded area where people had gathered to refuel, police said on October 16.
According to Channels Television, the catastrophic explosion that occurred at around 12:30 p.m. the same day (local time) also left 50 other people seriously injured and hospitalized.
The vehicle lost control near Khadija University while en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe state.
Lawan Adam, a local police officer, said people rushed to collect the spilled petrol after the tanker overturned.
"People were collecting fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion occurred, causing a large fire that killed 94 people on the spot," the officer said.
Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic and desperate”, with many struggling to rescue the injured amid the flames.
Sani Umar, a resident who was lucky enough to escape the fire, said: "It was terrifying. People were running everywhere, screaming for help. The fire spread so quickly that many people could not escape."
Channels Television said it had obtained images of the victims with severe burns, but could not share them because the images were “very bloody”.
