On October 3, Nigerian rescue workers said the death toll in the boat sinking in the northern state of Niger on October 1 could be up to more than 100 people.
The boat sank as about 300 passengers were on their way to the Muslim festival of Mawlid in Niger state. Rescuers have recovered 36 bodies and rescued 150 survivors, according to Ibrahim Audu Husseini, spokesman for the state's emergency response agency.
According to Mr. Husseini, there is no possibility of finding anyone alive. The job now is to recover all the bodies of the missing victims.
Meanwhile, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the same day sent condolences to the families of the victims of the boat sinking and called for an investigation into recent boat-related accidents.
Boat accidents are common on Nigeria's poorly regulated waterways, especially during the rainy season when water levels in rivers and lakes rise.
Last month, in the country's Zamfara state, an overloaded boat sank while crossing the Gumm River, killing more than 40 people.
