Donate blood while studying

28 years old, Mr. Pham Dang Hai Anh in Hai Duong City, employee of Brother Vietnam Industrial Co., Ltd. has donated blood 44 times.

It is known that Mr. Hai Anh started donating blood voluntarily 10 years ago. “At that time, I had just entered university. Hearing the seniors in the school’s student volunteer team promote this meaningful activity, I signed up to participate,” Mr. Hai Anh recalled.

After learning more about this meaningful program and activity, Mr. Hai Anh registered to join the school's volunteer student team and went to promote and mobilize blood donations at businesses in the Bac Thang Long Industrial Park (Hanoi).

Not only participating in regular blood donation, Hai Anh also registered to be a "living blood bank" so that any day or night, when there is a call, he will be ready to go... donate blood. Hai Anh said: "In my fourth year of university, during class, I received a phone call from doctors at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi informing me that there was a patient for surgery who urgently needed the same blood type as me but the hospital's blood bank was not enough. I immediately reported to the lecturer and went to the hospital with my classmates to donate blood. I felt very happy and joyful because my blood contributed to saving the patient from danger."

Now, despite his busy work schedule, Hai Anh still makes time to donate blood when it's time to donate regularly.

Two sisters actively donate blood

Ms. Vu Thi Thu and Ms. Vu Thi Thanh both donated blood at the "Drops of Love" program organized by the Hai Duong City Red Cross Society on May 4.

They are two sisters, Vu Thi Thu (born in 1969) and Vu Thi Thanh (born in 1973, both in Hai Duong city).

“I have been donating blood since 2009. That year, the Hai Duong Pump Joint Stock Company’s Union organized a blood donation for union members and employees in the company, so I also participated. That time, while waiting for my turn to donate blood, I saw a tall young man who fainted after donating blood, so I was quite nervous and worried and wondered if I could donate. But after donating blood, I felt normal, so I regularly donated blood after that because I thought it was a meaningful thing to do,” said Ms. Thu.

Not only actively donating blood, Ms. Thu is also an active propagandist encouraging friends, colleagues and relatives to participate. Following her sister, Ms. Vu Thi Thanh, Ms. Thu's younger sister, also participated in donating blood since 2016. Since then, every time there is a voluntary blood donation campaign, both sisters happily participate. Even when the donation schedule is reminded, the two sisters proactively contact the Provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization Committee to ask about upcoming blood donation programs. If there is no schedule in Hai Duong City, they are willing to travel 30-40 km to other localities to donate blood. Up to now, Ms. Thu has donated blood 26 times, Ms. Thanh has donated blood 22 times.

Officials must set an example.

With the view that doing mass movement work with just empty slogans will not achieve the desired results, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, President of the Hai Duong City Red Cross Society, always sets an example and takes the lead in all movements and activities of the society, including the voluntary blood donation movement.

In 2008, when the province organized a voluntary blood donation movement and mobilized cadres, party members, civil servants, union members, association members and people from all walks of life to participate, Ms. Dung boldly registered. “At that time, I had just given birth for nearly a year. My husband and parents opposed it, but I thought that the movement had just begun to be organized, and many people still did not understand blood donation correctly. If I did not set a good example and be active, the movement would have difficulty developing, so I joined,” Ms. Dung said.

Up to now, Ms. Dung has donated blood 43 times. Not only does she donate blood regularly, she also donates blood many times when medical facilities request it. From “real people, real work” like Ms. Dung, the number of people donating blood in Hai Duong City is increasing, contributing to the city’s voluntary blood donation movement spreading more and more widely and always exceeding the annual target.

Voluntary blood donation is a small act but has great social significance. Hopefully, there will be more and more exemplary blood donors, contributing to spreading the spirit of blood donation to save lives in the community.

In the first quarter of 2024, the province organized about 15 voluntary blood donation campaigns, attracting a large number of cadres, party members, workers, laborers, students and people from all walks of life to register to participate. As a result, Hai Duong collected 4,332 units of blood. In recent years, many groups and individuals in Hai Duong have been recognized for their active contributions to the voluntary blood donation movement.
