On September 17, the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said that as of September 15, there were 124.6 million people over 80 years old in the country, an increase of 270,000 people compared to the same period last year.

This is the first time the proportion of people over 80 years old in this country has exceeded 10% of the population.

The number of people over 65 in Japan continues to maintain a record high of 36.23 million, accounting for 29.1% of the population. This means that Japan continues to have the highest proportion of elderly people (over 65) in the world. In this age group, there are 20.51 million women and 15.72 million men. This difference shows that the average life expectancy of women tends to be higher than that of men in Japan.

Meanwhile, the number of people over 75 years old in Japan is 20.05 million, accounting for 16.1% of the population, surpassing the 20 million mark for the first time.

According to the ministry, the number of elderly people still working in Japan in 2022 increased to 9.12 million. This is the 19th consecutive year that this number has increased. The number of elderly people still working accounts for 13.6% of Japan's total workforce.

The data comes as the Japanese government continues to implement measures and policies to help the country overcome its rapidly aging population. The increasing aging population has forced the government to increase spending on social welfare programs. This could affect the economy when budget revenues are not enough to cover such programs, while budget deficits will cause the economy to decline.
