International tourists, including Vietnamese, can visit Japan from June 10, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has just announced.

Tourists are allowed to enter the country on condition that they purchase a package tour from a travel agency and are accompanied by a tour guide.

Currently, the Japanese Government relies on the Covid-19 epidemic situation of countries around the world to classify them into three groups: blue list, yellow list and red list to decide on entry procedures. Vietnam is currently in the yellow list, and to enter without quarantine, it is necessary to have 3 doses of vaccine and a negative PCR test before leaving the country.

The Prime Minister's announcement came after Japan tested opening package tours to international visitors from May 24. The current target group of visitors is only four countries: Australia, the US, Singapore and Thailand.

The Prime Minister said the strict border controls were necessary to give the country time to vaccinate its citizens and ensure adequate health care. Restrictions will be eased from June.

Japan closed its borders due to Covid-19 since April 2020. In 2019, the number of two-way visitors between Vietnam and Japan was the highest ever, with more than 1.4 million arrivals (up 18.9% compared to 2018), of which Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 495,000 (up 27.3%).
