Real Madrid have advanced to the Spanish Super Cup final after a dramatic 5-3 win over Atletico in extra time in semi-final 1.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid created an eye-catching match with a "rain of goals" at Al-Awwal Park (Saudi Arabia) in the first semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup.
After 120 minutes of intense competition, the Spanish Royal Team won 5-3 against Atletico to enter the final.
This is a worthy reward for coach Carlo Ancelotti and his team after what they showed in the Madrid derby.
This victory gives Real Madrid the chance to win the 13th Super Cup in history to narrow the gap with rival Barcelona.
The White Vultures' opponent in the final will be the winner of the second semi-final between Barcelona and Osasuna (taking place at 2:00 a.m. on January 12, Vietnam time).
In the semi-final match that just ended, Real Madrid and Ateltico Madrid created an eye-catching score chase when they actively played an open game after referee Javier Alberola blew the starting whistle.
In the 6th minute, the balance was soon broken when Mario Hermoso jumped high to head the ball to open the scoring for Atletico Madrid after a corner kick by Griezmann.
However, just 12 minutes later, with a similar scenario, Luka Modric took a corner kick, creating an opportunity for center-back Antonio Rüdiger to head in and equalize 1-1 for Real Madrid.
Antonio Rüdiger's goal gave Real Madrid a boost. The Whites increased the pressure and took a 2-1 lead with Ferland Mendy's exquisite backheel after a Dani Carvajal assist in the 29th minute.
But the joy of the Spanish Royal team lasted less than 10 minutes before Antoine Griezmann had a solo performance against Real's defense and scored the equalizer 2-2 (minute 37).
In the second half, the match continued to be exciting and dramatic with many "tit for tat" situations created by players from both teams in front of each other's goal.
In the 78th minute, Antonio Rüdiger accidentally put the ball into his own net after a block by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, helping Atletico Madrid take a 3-2 lead.
Unexpectedly conceding a goal, Real Madrid pushed up their formation to find a goal and their efforts were rewarded with Dani Carvajal's equalizer 3-3.
The 3-3 result remained the same when the whistle blew to end the 90 minutes of official play, forcing the two teams to enter extra time to determine the winner.
In extra time, coach Carlo Ancelotti's students played better than their opponents and scored two goals.
In the 116th minute, Stefan Savic accidentally became the sinner when he scored an own goal while trying to block Joselu's header, helping Real Madrid lead 4-3.
And when time entered the 120+2 minute, Brahim Diaz accelerated strongly in a quick counter-attack and scored into an empty net to seal a 5-3 victory for Real Madrid.
A dramatic victory over Atletico Madrid has sent Real Madrid straight to the Spanish Super Cup final.
After the victory, coach Carlo Ancelotti could not hide his emotions and affirmed that the team will never give up under any circumstances.
“This comeback is nothing new, it is in the DNA of Real Madrid,” said the Italian. “Let it be an interesting experience for the young players. This team never gives up. You can lose but never give up.”
“The game was very intense, both teams fought hard and did not want to lose. We won because we were stronger at the end,” added coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Real Madrid's opponents in the Spanish Super Cup final will be Barcelona or Osasuna. As planned, the final will take place in the early morning of January 15 (Vietnam time).
After the final, Real Madrid will return to Spain to prepare for the rematch with Atletico Madrid in the Spanish King's Cup.
