Russia moves towards restoring rice exports

February 14, 2024 14:27

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture aims to triple rice production in the next three years to restore exports of the grain.

Russia plans to harvest 2 million tons of rice in 3 years, Deputy Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut said at the ongoing Russia International Forum in Moscow. She explained the short time frame for the ambitious goal due to the possibility of a rice shortage in the Asian market. “If we do not reach this level, Russia will miss out on the potential of the Asian market,” she stressed.

According to the Russian Federal Statistics Service, Russia's rice output in 2023 will reach 1.066 million tons compared to 920.1 million tons in 2022. However, Russia is currently banning exports of this grain after an incident at the Fedorov dam in the main rice-producing region of Krasnodar to protect the domestic market. The 2022 incident cost Russia 797,600 tons of rice from 1.076 million tons in 2021. The export ban is in effect until June 2024.

Currently, many rice growing regions in Russia have announced that they have secured production for the domestic market and plan to increase harvests in the near future. Previously, Russia exported about 180,000-240,000 tons of rice each year.
