On April 22, sharing about the cause of hail and thunderstorms appearing frequently in the northern provinces and cities recently, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Climate Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that the influence of El Nino phenomenon has made the temperature in our country higher than the average of many years.

Therefore, during the current transitional season, convection will become more intense, causing storms and tornadoes to occur with greater intensity; accompanying natural disasters such as gusts, strong winds, and lightning will also occur more frequently.

Regarding the recent thunderstorms and hail, Mr. Huong said that in recent days, a low pressure trough with an axis of 23-25 degrees North latitude has moved down from the southern region of China. The movement is affected by a cool air mass pushed down from mainland China.

The interaction creates strong convection in the North. As a result, strong thunderstorms occur in the North and cause extreme weather such as strong winds, lightning, and even hail.

The Northern region is in the transitional season, so in April, May and early June there is a high possibility that thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and hail will continue to appear.

“We recommend that people should not take shelter under trees in the rain, to prevent trees from being uprooted, broken, or even struck by storms, tornadoes, or lightning, which can affect lives. When there is a storm, people should seek shelter indoors and not go outside,” Mr. Huong emphasized.

In addition, Mr. Huong advised people to follow updated weather information on the website of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and the mass media to have appropriate prevention plans.

Nearly 7,000 houses collapsed, damaged, and had their roofs blown off.

According to quick reports from the provinces of Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Son La, Phu Tho and Quang Ninh, as of 6:00 p.m. on April 21, damage caused by rain accompanied by thunderstorms and tornadoes has killed 1 person in Ha Giang province and injured 8 people in other localities.

Regarding housing, 6,891 houses collapsed, were damaged, and had their roofs blown off. In addition, 53 schools had their roofs blown off and were damaged.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the thunderstorm season in our country usually starts from March to April and ends around late October to early November.
