In Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province, a death due to rabies has just been recorded.

According to a report from the Dien Bien Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC), the death due to rabies was recorded on March 27, that is Mr. LVĐ. (50 years old), residing in Thanh Nua commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province.

The patient's family said: On March 26, patient LVĐ. showed signs of fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, and difficulty swallowing. In the early morning of March 27, the patient was taken to Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital by his family for examination and was diagnosed with needing to be monitored for rabies. That night, the patient's condition worsened, with a high mortality rate, so the family asked to send the patient home and the patient died shortly thereafter.

On March 29, the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology announced the test results of patient LVĐ. positive for rabies virus.

Thus, since the beginning of the year, Dien Bien province has recorded 2 deaths due to rabies (1 case in Dien Bien Dong district, 1 in Dien Bien district). The above cases were not vaccinated against rabies, lacked knowledge about rabies and how to prevent and control rabies.

Therefore, in order to avoid deaths due to rabies in the future, the Center for Disease Control of Dien Bien province recommends that people who are bitten by dogs or cats should immediately go to the nearest medical facility for advice and timely rabies vaccination, and absolutely do not self-treat or seek medical treatment from a traditional healer.

For families that raise dogs and cats, it is necessary to take good measures: Vaccinate 100% of dogs and cats and re-vaccinate annually according to the recommendations of local veterinary agencies; dogs must be chained, locked up, and muzzled when going out.
