Laos detects H5N1 bird flu

The Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos said that the country has detected an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu at a market in the capital Vientiane.

The Lao Animal Disease Research Center announced that it had received 65 samples from chickens and ducks at Danxang Market, Saythani District, Vientiane, including 30 samples from chickens, 30 samples from ducks and 5 samples from the environment. PCR testing detected 30 samples infected with H5N1 influenza and to confirm further, the agency collected more information on some infected animals and took 11 more samples, through testing detected H5N1 strain in 5 samples and H9N2 in 5 samples.

Faced with the above situation, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Vientiane capital has directed the livestock industry to coordinate with relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the epidemic, collect information, and localize the epidemic; at the same time, ban the transportation of poultry, destroy sick poultry or poultry at risk of infection that need to be localized; propagate and instruct pet owners and people to clean and spray disinfectants, sprinkle lime powder on the barn and surrounding areas...
