From 2025, the city government of Paris, the capital of France, will ban the business of pony rides for children in public parks.

The decision comes after years of animal rights activists fighting for the rights of ponies.

Horseback riding has been a popular activity in Parisian parks such as the Champ de Mars, Parc Monceau and Parc du Luxembourg for decades. It is mainly held on weekends and during school holidays. However, animal rights groups have been campaigning for years to ban the rides, arguing that the ponies are forced to work for days without removing their iron shoes, without access to clean water and hay, and are forced to travel for hours in trucks.

"Ponies are not toys. Children do not learn anything about horses through these rides," said Amandine Sansivens, an activist from animal rights group Paris Animaux Zoopolis (PAZ).

A petition calling for a ban on PAZ's pony rides has gathered more than 8,400 signatures.

Last month, Paris City Hall decided to revoke the operating licenses of those who provide horse-riding services. In 2021, the city hall issued regulations to ensure the living conditions and health of ponies.
