On December 6, Iran announced that it had launched a spacecraft with a human capsule into space, affirming that this was a new successful step towards sending astronauts into space in the future.
The official IRNA news agency quoted Iranian Telecommunications Minister Issa Zarepour as saying that the spacecraft named "Salman", weighing 500 kg, was successfully launched to an altitude of 130 km.
It is not clear whether the spacecraft carried any living creatures. Iran has sent animals into space in the past 13 years, including turtles, mice, and worms. In April 2020, after several failures, Iran also successfully launched a military satellite into space.
Iran's space technology tests have been opposed by the US and some Western countries, due to concerns that they could be used to launch long-range ballistic missiles. However, Tehran denies these allegations.
