On the night of April 3, right after leaving the house provided by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), coach Philippe Troussier boarded a plane back to France.
Coach Philippe Troussier and the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) have reached an agreement to terminate his contract with the U23 and Vietnam national teams since the night of March 26. Since then, he has been staying at the house provided for experts in the campus of the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center (VYF) to complete the procedures.
On the night of April 3, the French coach left the expert’s house and immediately boarded a plane back home. At the airport, he shared with the media his feelings of missing Vietnam with its pleasures such as riding a motorbike around town and drinking coffee.
"I'm sorry I couldn't bring joy to everyone. I will miss Vietnam. Who knows, maybe we will have a chance to meet again at the 2024 Paris Olympics," he said.
Returning to France, Coach Troussier is not thinking about work yet. He wants to take time to rest and completely cure his knee pain.
Coach Philippe Troussier has been appointed as the head coach of the U23 Vietnam team with a 3-year contract - from March 1, 2023 to July 31, 2026, with a salary of more than 50,000 USD/month (after tax) and other benefits.
The biggest goal for Mr. Troussier is to help the Vietnamese team strive to get a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
In the first year of his contract, coach Philippe Troussier's mission of helping the Vietnam U22 team reach the final of the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia failed.
In 2024, the goal for coach Philippe Troussier is to bring the Vietnamese team through the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup and win a medal at the 2024 AFF Cup. However, two consecutive defeats against Indonesia have made this a distant dream.
In more than a year of leading the Vietnamese team, Mr. Troussier had 14 matches, 10 losses, 4 wins. When Mr. Troussier took over the position of head coach of the national team, the Vietnamese team was ranked 94th in the world. However, after only 14 matches in charge, the Vietnamese team fell to 107th in the world, the lowest ranking in many years.
