Because both sides reached an agreement to terminate the contract ahead of schedule, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) does not have to compensate about 42 billion VND to coach Troussier.
Immediately after the 0-3 defeat to Indonesia on the evening of March 26, VFF reached an agreement to terminate the contract with coach Philippe Troussier. The issue that many people are interested in right now is how much compensation VFF must pay the French coach.
It is known that Coach Troussier's salary is about 1.5 billion VND/month (60,000 USD). Therefore, with more than 2 years left in the contract, VFF may have to compensate the 69-year-old coach up to more than 40 billion VND if he unilaterally terminates the contract.
However, according to information from VFF, both sides are working in good faith. A VFF leader said that Coach Troussier is a professional so he accepted to leave the 'hot seat' after the Vietnamese team did not achieve the expected results.
Because the contract included a clause requiring coach Troussier to lead the Vietnamese team through the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, the VFF did not have much difficulty in agreeing to terminate the contract with the French coach more than 2 years ahead of schedule. This also means that the VFF does not have to compensate Mr. Troussier with about 42 billion VND.
According to some sources, VFF will pay the remaining 3 months salary (about 4.5 billion VND) to Coach Troussier. The reason is that in theory, the Vietnam team still has a chance to pass the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup if they win both matches against the Philippines and Iraq, and Indonesia does not have good results.
In fact, this is a very unlikely possibility in the context of the Vietnamese team saying goodbye to its head coach, while Indonesia only needs 3 more points to secure second place in Group F regardless of the results of other matches.
The breakup between VFF and Coach Troussier is considered good for both. The French coach apologized to Vietnamese fans for the poor performance.
After parting ways with coach Troussier, VFF is looking for an interim coach to lead U23 Vietnam to the 2024 AFC U23 Championship finals. The leading candidate for this position is coach Hoang Anh Tuan.
Because the Vietnamese team will not gather until June to play the remaining two matches of the second qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup, the VFF has time to find a suitable coach, possibly a coach in the Asian region.
