Fun experience with AI characters

“Hello class 4E, Ly Tu Trong Primary School (Hai Duong City). Today, the astronauts are pencils, books, and rulers, and will explore the books you have read…”. That is the speech of the cartoon character designed by the teacher using AI application to lead students into the lesson “Expanding vocabulary: Books and libraries” of Vietnamese subject.

Instead of the image of a teacher calling on students to review their previous lessons, there is the singing and clapping of students and teachers of class 4E, Ly Tu Trong Primary School (Hai Duong City) joining in the dance of the cartoon characters in the video broadcast on TV through the song "My Dear Books and Pens".

Teacher Doan Thi Ngoc Mai, a teacher at Ly Tu Trong Primary School, said the children were very excited to sing with the new AI cartoon characters, creating excitement before starting a new lesson.

The AI ​​characters act as guides to the next lesson content. In the practice section, the AI ​​characters start talking to each other, creating questions for students to answer. Each group of students will discuss and present in front of the whole class.

Interspersed between the lesson content are AI cartoon characters. For example, the pencil character says: "Wow, class 4E is really commendable, reading so many different kinds of books. Where did you find those books, show us?"…

At the end of the training and practice session, the AI ​​cartoon characters read a funny Rhapsody about a visit to the library. The cartoon characters also called out the names of the 4E class students to remind them how to read and use books at the library and spread the love of reading to the children.

Nguyen Duc Nam and his friends really enjoyed each lesson, interacting with AI cartoon characters, playing games… designed by the teacher in the lesson. “Such lessons help us learn while playing, creating a very comfortable feeling and remembering knowledge better,” Nam said.

In each exercise, Ms. Mai plays the role of a guide, and the students take the lead. With a new teaching method, the teacher has brought students interesting lessons. Students are proactive in learning, discussing in groups, and exchanging knowledge and skills to be achieved.

According to teacher Mai, the application of AI such as ChatGPT, Canva, Qzzi, Padlet... is no longer strange to teachers in the school. AI has become a bridge between teaching theory and practical application, opening up new opportunities for learning and optimizing the teaching process. "Using AI helps us save time and improve teaching efficiency such as searching for documents, designing electronic lesson plans, integrating animated videos, games... in lectures", said Ms. Mai.

Ms. Tran Tuyet Nhung, Vice Principal of Ly Tu Trong Primary School, said that the application of AI in teaching has been identified by the school as one of the important tasks in the school year to implement the innovation goals of the 2018 general education program. The school is one of the leading units applying AI in teaching in Hai Duong City.

Hai Duong city and Tu Ky district are two typical localities in the province that have strongly implemented digital transformation, including applying AI in teaching.

In Tu Ky district, the application of AI in teaching is being gradually deployed and applied by schools from kindergarten to secondary school. Teacher Nguyen Nam Hung, Principal of Phan Boi Chau Secondary School (Tu Ky) said that some teachers have applied AI to prepare lessons, create tests, and evaluate students and have had initial results.

Right from the beginning of this school year, the Department of Education and Training of Hai Duong has proactively developed a plan for the school year, including effectively implementing the Project "Enhancing the application of information technology and digital transformation in education and training for the period 2022-2025, with a vision to 2030".

Accordingly, since the beginning of the year, the Department of Education and Training, some district-level Education and Training Departments such as Hai Duong City, Tu Ky District, Kinh Mon Town have organized provincial and district-level seminars on digital transformation, including the application of AI in teaching. From there, gradually creating opportunities for exchanging and learning professional experiences for schools and teachers in the province.

The representative of the Department of Education and Training said that the goal of the 2018 general education program focuses on developing students' capacity. Therefore, each teacher needs to innovate teaching methods, in which the application of digital transformation and artificial intelligence AI in teaching and learning is an inevitable trend of the educational innovation process. However, teachers should use AI as a tool to support teaching and learning, not to replace the interaction between teachers and students in the classroom. The role of teachers in imparting and guiding students to acquire knowledge is still the focus.
