The Israeli military says Hezbollah has fired more than a dozen projectiles into the north of the country, a day after Tel Aviv warned of “all-out war”.
"About 15 projectiles were launched from Lebanon towards the Kiryat Shmona area, one of which was intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) air defense system," the Israeli military said in a statement today.
The IDF added that the attack by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon, caused no casualties. The Israeli military said its warplanes also struck a Hezbollah military structure in the Tyre area and infrastructure in Khiam, Lebanon.
The armed group Hezbollah announced on the same day that it had fired "dozens of Katyusha rockets and artillery shells" at the barracks in Kiryat Shmona, northern Israel, in retaliation for Israeli raids on Yarun and Khiam.
The new round of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah comes a day after the Israeli military said it had approved operational plans for an attack on Lebanon. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz had earlier warned of the risk of an “all-out attack” to destroy Hezbollah.
"In an all-out attack, Hezbollah will be destroyed and Lebanon will come under heavy attack," he said.
Amos Hochstein, the US President's special envoy, visited Israel and Lebanon this week, calling on both sides to de-escalate tensions in the border area "urgently".
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon escalated after the conflict in Gaza broke out in early October 2023 and the two sides have been fighting almost daily in the border area since then.
At least 473 people have been killed in Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah members and 92 civilians. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities said at least 15 soldiers and 11 civilians were killed in the country's northern border area.
