Russia abstained, while the remaining 14 members voted in favor of a US-drafted resolution supporting President Biden's proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas movement.
On June 10, the United Nations Security Council adopted a US-drafted resolution supporting President Joe Biden's proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.
Russia abstained, while the remaining 14 council members voted in favor.
The US completed this document on June 9 after 6 days of negotiations among council members.
The resolution welcomed the new ceasefire proposal, "which was accepted by Israel, called on Hamas to also accept it, and called on both sides to fully implement its terms without delay and without conditions."
The resolution also goes into detail about the proposal, stating that “if negotiations last longer than six weeks for phase one, the ceasefire will remain in place as long as negotiations continue.”
Earlier in the day, Hamas called on the US to pressure Israel to end the Gaza conflict - ahead of a planned visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the region to push for a ceasefire.
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri stressed that the movement calls on the US administration to put pressure on Israel to prevent the war in Gaza and that the Hamas movement is ready to actively address any initiative to ensure the ultimate goal of ending the war.
