The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the trunk latch on some recalled Kia vehicles may crack, making it impossible to open the trunk from the inside and potentially trapping people inside the vehicle.
According to Yonhap news agency, on September 1, Kia Corp., South Korea's second largest automaker by sales, announced it would recall nearly 320,000 cars in the US market because the trunk cannot be opened from the inside.
Kia representatives said there have been no injuries or accidents related to the vehicles subject to this recall, and urged owners to bring their vehicles to Kia dealers to have the faulty trunks replaced free of charge.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the vehicles subject to the recall include 2016-2017 Rio subcompacts, 2016-2018 Optima sedans and 2017-2018 Optima hybrid sedans.
The agency said the trunk latch on these models could crack, making it impossible to open the trunk from the inside and risking trapping people inside the vehicle.
