On January 14, the South Korean military confirmed that the ballistic missile launched by North Korea earlier that day was a medium-range missile.
Earlier, Japan's NHK reported that North Korea's missile appeared to have fallen outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Meanwhile, the Japanese Coast Guard, citing information from the country's Ministry of Defense, said an "object, possibly a ballistic missile, was launched from North Korea," and warned ships to be careful.
This is North Korea's first missile launch since it test-fired the Hwasong-18 solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile, considered North Korea's most advanced, on December 18.
The latest launch comes amid a series of artillery shellings from both North and South Korea as part of live-fire military exercises along the maritime border between the two Koreas.
