South Korea's military said North Korea fired an unidentified projectile southward into the Yellow Sea; Japan also said North Korea fired a missile.
According to Yonhap news agency, on the evening of May 27 (Vietnam time), the South Korean military announced that North Korea had launched an unidentified object in a southern direction into the Yellow Sea.
Meanwhile, according to Kyodo news agency, Japan's J-Alert early warning system earlier said North Korea had fired a missile, suspected to be a ballistic missile.
Japan has now lifted the warning for residents in Okinawa prefecture after determining that the missile did not reach Japanese territory.
Earlier in the day, the US called on North Korea not to conduct any missile or satellite launches and return to dialogue, after Pyongyang informed Japan of its plan to launch a space rocket to put a satellite into orbit before June 4.
