On April 26, two Russian astronauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub completed a 4-hour, 36-minute spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), 2 hours earlier than previously scheduled.
According to the Russian Federal Space Agency Roscosmos, during the spacewalk, Kononenko and Chub put the radar of the Napor-miniRSA experiment into operation. The experiment is aimed at observing the Earth using synthetic aperture radar. They also installed new equipment on the space laboratory, including the Kvartz-M scientific instrument to study the corrosion of the ISS's exterior under the influence of the upper atmosphere.
In addition, the astronauts removed the Biorisk-MSN experiment from the Poisk module, which studies the resistance of ISS materials to bacteria and fungi living on them, and deployed a pressure and sedimentation control device on the same module. At the beginning of the spacewalk, they collected samples for testing experiments from the surface of the Nauka module.
Kononenko and Chub have been on the ISS since September 21, 2023. Their first joint spacewalk took place on October 25-26 of the same year. During the mission, they disconnected the hydraulic circuits of the heat exchanger, one of which was leaking, from the external hydraulic circuits of the thermal control system of the Nauka module. In addition, the astronauts installed a radar on the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module to monitor the Earth's surface. During their stay on the ISS, the two astronauts are expected to perform up to four spacewalks.
