The Indian government said on October 17 that the country aims to send an astronaut to the Moon by 2040, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the construction of a space station by 2035.
In August, India became the first country to land a spacecraft near the unexplored south pole of the Moon, just days after a similar Russian mission failed.
Following that success, India launched a rocket carrying a spacecraft to study the Sun and plans to conduct a test this week as part of a crewed space mission.
“The Prime Minister directed that India now needs to move towards new and ambitious goals, including establishing a ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ by 2035 and landing the first Indian on the Moon by 2040. To realise this vision, the space agency will develop a roadmap for lunar exploration,” the government of India said in a statement.
Prime Minister Modi also called on Indian scientists to conduct missions to explore Venus and Mars.
