Vo Thi Kim Phung and Le Tuan Minh respectively won tickets to the Women's and Men's Chess World Cup, after achieving high results in the East Asian tournament.
Women's Grandmaster (WGM) Kim Phung won four games and drew five, earning 6.5 points overall, to win the East Asia Championship (Asia's region 3.3) with 0.5 points more than the next player. According to the rules, the top player in the tournament will qualify for the 2023 Chess World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan next August. In this event, player Nguyen Thi Mai Hung won the silver medal.

In the final game that ended on the afternoon of May 12 in Jakarta, Kim Phung had a balanced position with the home player Chelsie Sihite. If she drew, Kim Phung would be the champion. To win the final standard to become an International Master (IM), she had to win. However, if she tried to win in a draw, it could lead to defeat and loss of her World Cup spot. Kim Phung was determined to win to complete her goal of becoming an IM, but in the end, she still tied.
In the men's group, the situation was more difficult for male Grandmaster (GM) Le Tuan Minh in the final game. Mongolian player Bilguun Sumiya had secured an early spot, while Tuan Minh could not afford to lose to Batchuluun Tsegmed, and hoped that Priasmoro Novendra would not win. Novendra was forced to take a risk and lose, helping Tuan Minh complete his goal of finishing second and securing a spot at the World Cup, as the men's category had two spots.
Tuan Minh scored six points in nine games, ranking second after Bilguun. He and Kim Phung will represent Vietnam at the Chess World Cup through the qualifying round, as Vietnam no longer has an invitation slot. The invitation slot is only for teams with high achievements at the 2022 Chess Olympiad. But at that tournament, the Vietnamese men's team did not participate, and the women's team was outside the Top 50.
After the achievements of Kim Phung and Tuan Minh, President of the Vietnam Chess Federation Pham Van Tien awarded 500 USD to each player.
The 2023 Chess World Cup will reserve three spots for male players to compete in the 2023 Candidates - the tournament that will select the challenger to Dinh Lap Nhan's throne. The Candidates will consist of eight players, selected based on various tournament systems under FIDE.
