The strange sport pickleball is becoming a new trend in Vietnam, but not everyone knows the origin of this name.
In recent times, pickleball has emerged as a new sport that is popular in the grassroots sports community. The name pickleball has also become a trending keyword on social networks.
What is Pickleball? Why is it called that? Does Pickleball have a Vietnamese name? These are questions that many amateur players are interested in when they first learn about this strange sport that has recently been introduced to Vietnam.
Pickleball is made up of two words "pickle" and "ball". However, the meaning of the name of this sport has nothing to do with pickles.
"Pickleball" was named by Joan, wife of Joel Pritchard - the founder of this sport - after the phrase "Pickle boat" which is quite famous in rowing.
"Pickle boat" is used to refer to a racing team made up of people who were either discarded from other teams, or were assembled at the last minute by chance. The name probably implies that the sport was invented later and used equipment from many other sports.
There are theories that Joel Pritchard named the game after his dog Pickle. However, the US Pickleball Federation has dismissed this rumor, as the Pritchards' dog Pickle was born in 1968 - 3 years after pickleball was invented (1965).
Pickleball does not have an official Vietnamese name yet. The pickleball community in Vietnam still temporarily calls pickleball "foam ball". However, in reality, the ball of this sport is made of hard plastic, hollow and has holes.
Pickleball is a sport that combines tennis, badminton and table tennis.
This is a competitive sport played between 2 people (singles) or 4 people (doubles). It can be played indoors or outdoors.
To score a point, the serving team uses a racket to serve and return the ball to the opponent's court. The goal is to prevent the opponent from returning the ball or committing a foul.
Only the serving team can score points. If the receiving team wins a rally, they do not score a point but they gain the right to serve on the next rally.
Pickleball equipment is quite simple. Pickleball players only need a pickleball racket and a specialized basket to compete.
Pickleball rackets are shaped like table tennis rackets, but are quite heavy, ranging from 200 to 250 grams, almost as heavy as tennis rackets (283 to 311 grams).
Rackets are made from many different materials such as wood, carbon fiber or graphite, players choose rackets to suit their personal needs. In Vietnam, pickleball rackets cost about 1.5 million VND or more.
Pickleballs are made of plastic, are about 73mm in diameter and weigh between 22 and 26.5 grams. They are round in shape and have many holes.
Indoor balls typically have fewer holes and are quite soft. In contrast, outdoor balls are harder and have more holes to withstand the effects of wind and weather.
In pickleball, the side that reaches 11 first by at least 2 points wins the game. If the score is 10-10, the game continues until one of the two teams wins two consecutive points.
The unique feature of this sport is that only the serving team can score points. If the receiving team wins a rally, they will have the right to serve again and will not score a point.
Pickleball was founded by Joel Pritchard in 1965. He is a businessman and politician from Washington state, USA.
Their original idea was to create a game to entertain family and friends in the area where they lived. The game later spread to other states in the US and became a popular sport.
By 1976, pickleball had official rules and the American Pickleball Association was formed. Since then, the game has spread to more than 50 other countries, including Vietnam.
Pickleball was introduced to Vietnam in 2018, developing mainly in Ho Chi Minh City before reaching Hanoi. Currently, pickleball is a sport that attracts about 10,000 people practicing and competing nationwide.
In June 2024, the 2024 Asian Pickleball Open was held for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). The tournament brought together 190 international players from 19 different countries, with a total prize value of about 30,000 USD.
