Stampede at church in capital Abuja (Nigeria) leaves at least 10 people dead

The stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the capital Abuja, as more than 3,000 people were gathering to receive relief goods ahead of Christmas.

At least 10 people, including children, were killed and many others injured in a stampede that occurred on the morning of December 21 during the distribution of pre-Christmas relief goods in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

The incident occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama district and the exact number of injured people is not yet known.

According to the spokesman of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, the relief distribution event attracted more than 3,000 people from nearby villages and low-income suburbs.

He said that after the tragic incident, the distribution of relief goods has been suspended.

Security forces were deployed to restore order, disperse the crowds and secure the area.
