How does 5G cost compared to 4G?

The lowest 5G package costs 135,000 VND, nearly double the 70,000 VND of the 4G package, but has 8 times more capacity and many utilities.

A person is measuring 5G network speed on the phone on the morning of October 15.

At an event on the morning of October 15 in Hanoi, Viettel - the first network operator to commercialize 5G - said it had launched 19 packages for individual users, including 11 prepaid packages and 8 postpaid packages.

Packages are charged monthly, with costs ranging from VND135,000-480,000 for prepaid users and from VND200,000 to VND2 million for postpaid subscribers.

Each package offers different rights, in addition to Internet capacity, there are also incentives for domestic and international calls, playing games, accessing social networks or utilities for watching TV and storage.

In terms of access capacity, the benefits of users in most of the newly announced 5G packages are higher than 4G. However, setting a higher floor than the 4G package means that users do not have low options such as 70,000, 90,000 VND and have to spend a larger amount to experience 5G.

Specifically, Viettel's lowest monthly 4G package is ST70K, users get 15 GB of data for 30 days of use. Meanwhile, with the new 5G135 package, users have 4 GB of access per day, equivalent to 120 GB per month, 8 times higher.

For the same amount of money, some 5G packages offer more incentives. For example, with 300,000 VND per month:

However, because 4G has been deployed for many years, the network operator also continuously launches separate incentives for each subscriber. For example, the 4G package called SD135, with the same price of 135,000 VND but with 5 GB capacity per day and access to TV360 Basic. This benefit is higher than the newly released 5G135 package, but only applies to certain users on the network operator's list.

In return, the 5G package expands the subscription limit for users. For example, prepaid subscribers now have an additional option of the highest VND 480,000, allowing access to 20 GB/day, equivalent to 600 GB per month. The highest postpaid package is N2000, priced at VND 2 million, allowing the use of 50 GB/day or 1,500 GB/month, along with 400 minutes of off-net calls, free on-net calls under 60 minutes.

To determine the appropriate 5G package, users can use methods such as: logging into the MyViettel application; Viettel Hub page, or typing *098#; calling the switchboard, composing a message to register.

During the launch ceremony on the morning of October 15, the network operator said that 4G users can now register for 5G packages without changing SIM cards. In addition to the differences in capacity, 5G users will enjoy high-speed connections, which can reach up to 1 Gbps, 10 times faster than 4G, with almost zero latency.

With current normal usage, users will not notice a significant difference between 5G and 4G. However, in the near future, many applications and services will be built to exploit the benefits of this new generation of connection technology.

In addition, since it is still in the process of being deployed, users also need to check whether the area they live in has 5G connection. Viettel said it has installed 6,500 broadcasting stations in the central areas of 63 provinces and cities across the country. In addition, the required condition is a phone that supports 5G.

In the coming time, when the next two major carriers, VNPT and MobiFone, join the race, 5G prices on the market are expected to fluctuate and become more competitive.

5G technology began to be commercialized in the world 5 years ago, most popular in China, the US... while many other countries are still in the testing phase.

The advantage of the new generation network is high speed, reaching over 1 Gbps, along with super low latency and the ability to support a large number of devices at the same time. Therefore, 5G will promote many applications such as self-driving cars, remote control of surgical equipment, virtual reality and augmented reality experiences, IoT connectivity...

However, because the frequencies used for 5G in Vietnam are all large frequencies, 5G stations have smaller coverage, forcing network operators to deploy more stations.
